Simple Secret Ferret Care Tips

Posted by | Nails | Saturday 13 March 2010 12:52 am

Let’s start with the basic—grooming. You don’t want to let your ferret become dirty and smelly, right?

Bathing them once a week would be enough. Too much bathing may result to dry coat which will lead to a more oily and smelly coat.

Inspect the teeth and gums periodically, clip the nails every day and clean the ears from time to time.

Now, let’s go to their food. Owners should seek to feed ferrets high protein foods.   Stick to food made for ferrets and not for other pets.

Food substitution and improper diet may result to poor health and additional, unnecessary costs.  Also remember that they like to play with objects that are not safe for them.   These may cause accidents so keep them in high areas or a locked cabinet so that they won’t play with it without your knowledge.

Should You Have a Daily Routine with Your Ferret?

When purchasing a ferret, you need to ask yourself if you have enough spare time to spend on another being aside from yourself; if you are willing to change your daily routine to accommodate your pet; and if you are okay in saying no to traveling and other extracurricular activities of yours.

If you have a resounding yes for all three, then a ferret is just right for you. Ferrets, especially those who are more active, want a lot of playtime. They are social animals and need company and someone to play with. They are prone to depression.  Spend at least three hours with your ferret for a supervised out of the cage playtime—this means you have to play with them  and supervise their activities. You can also make it more fun by having lots of toys!
