Thirteen Tips to Improve Your Health

Posted by | Slimming | Saturday 4 September 2010 1:41 am

You can have a positive effect on your health with some simple, straightforward guidelines. These are health tips, not necessarily weight loss tips. But making sure your body has the nutrients, vitamins and minerals it needs is the first step to losing weight. A body lacking these essential elements is going to stay hungry and get hungrier the longer it lacks what it needs to thrive.

1. Microwave in glass.

Pop-your frozen entree onto a glass plate or dish before microwaving. The thin plastic containers used for frozen foods have already been through several degradations when formed, then loaded with hot prepared food, and then frozen. The degradation of plastics caused by extreme heat and cold have been linked to cancer. If you must heat your food in them occasionally, do so, but NEVER reuse them over and over. The same advice goes for your plastic water bottle. Never freeze it!

2. Avoid aspartame and other sugar substitutes.

Otherwise known as nutrasweet, aspartame was pronounced “safe” by the FDA only after political manipulation by the system in 1981. Although the government declared it safe for 20 years, they have now quietly downgraded it to “probably not safe” after several lawsuits were filed against the makers of such items as Flintstones vitamins, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dannon yogurt, and Wrigley chewing gum. Long-term studies show a direct correlation between its use and lung cancer in women, the primary users of sugar substitutes.

Think the newest sugar substitute is any better? Splenda, otherwise known as sucralose, is a molecule of sugar chemically bonded to chlorine. Yes, the same chemical that’s in your bleach and has been linked to breast cancer. Canada is considering banning chlorine bleach because of cancer studies there.

What’s more interesting is that sugar substitutes don’t even help you lose weight. There is substantial evidence showing that it alters a person’s ability to perceive sweetness and this is detrimental to determining your satisfaction level. The same studies show a rise in the use of sugar by people using sugar substitutes and positive weight loss when the substitutes are taken out of the diet.

3. Can the sodas.

Sodas either offer you lots of high-fructose corn syrup (leading contributor to diabetes) or artificial sweeteners (their use correlates to higher cancer rates). Why play Russian roulette with these empty calorie drinks? Soda also dehydrates you so you actually need more water, not less, when drinking them. Why put dirty brown chemical water into your body?

4. Eat a minimum of 5-6 vegetables and fruits a day.

The ONLY positive effect on pre-cancerous cells is a diet high in fruits and vegetables. 5-6 is a minimum.

5. Avoid white in your diet.

Not the egg whites! You know the whites that are nutritionless: white flour, white sugar, potatoes. A baked potato, if topped with low-fat items might be OK once in a while but white flour and white sugar items like cookies, cake, donuts, scones, muffins and bagels add a ton of empty calories with no nutrition to your diet. You can literally eat these items all day and stay hungry. If you eat bread, make sure it is 100% whole wheat or whole grain.

6. Mind your fats.

Not all fats impede weight loss. Good fats such as olive oil and omega-3 oils from fish like salmon and tuna give your body a positive boost in many ways. Avoid solid fats such as butter, lard and shortening. Another fat to avoid: anything used in a fast food restaurant where oils in deep fryers are often used way beyond any nutritional value.

7. Move every day.

If you don’t currently exercise, start moving in some way for 10 minutes every day. Our bodies were meant to move and they shut down if they aren’t given a range of motion. . . joints and muscles begin to atrophy, backs stiffen up, hearts lose strength. Even the busiest executive can find 10 minutes in the beginning of a new fitness plan to take a short walk or hop on a stationary bike. Another alternative: put on some music and dance before your day begins or ends or even while making dinner. The idea is to make a start, however limited you think your time is.

8. Get into the sunshine.

Yes, extreme exposure can cause skin damage but human beings need the vitamin D they get from the sun. Doctors are often prescribing megadoses of vitamin D because their patients have been using such a high level of sunblock that they wound up deficient in D. In the winter and in northern regions, this is especially important. If the sun peeks out on a grey winter day, run out and grab some rays — without sunglasses! Don’t look directly at the sun, however, just bask in the rays and, if temperatures allow, roll up your shirtsleeves and open your collar.

9. Avoid toxic people.

Negativity breeds more negativity. Our bodies hear every thought we think so don’t get sucked into coworkers’, friends’ or family’s toxic venom. Your job is to maintain the best possible attitude about yourself, your health/fitness and the world in general. If you listen to negativity, jealousy and discontent all day, no wonder the gym doesn’t look inviting at 5 p. m. !

10. Address addictions.

Feeling compelled to eat, drink or otherwise avoid life limits your power of choice. If you feel you cannot stop certain behaviors that are detrimental to your health and well-being, it may be an addiction. Addictions include food, alcohol, drugs, excuse-making, emotional drama, procrastination, TV, inactivity. . . anything that impacts your health in a negative way.

11. Pop a vitamin.

A multi-vitamin cannot make up for poor food choices but it can help you get some of the nutrients you need. I recommend a quality multi from a reputable dealer, not drugstore type vitamins, which have been shown to have lots of fillers and ineffective ingredients. Good brands are Usana, Shaklee, Nature’s Sunshine. Women over 40 need calcium supplements as well.

12. Get plenty of sleep.

First, you’ll need to determine how much you need. It will probably be between 7 and 10 hours per night for an adult. Only about half of Americans get the sleep they need each night. Lack of sleep is one of the biggest components of overeating. When you are not fully rested, you’ll eat more in an attempt to get the fuel you need to make it through the day. The truth, however, is that no amount of caffeine, sugar or fat will make up for inadequate sleep.

13. Nourish your soul in positive ways.

What really feeds you at a soul level? What calms you and makes you feel valued? It might be a bath, a book, meaningful conversation, time alone, a nap, a cup of tea or playing with your kids or grandkids. The key is to discover what feeds your soul and makes you feel satisfied in life.

It may feel overwhelming to tackle all these changes at once. Changing one thing at a time is just as good, sometimes better, because that allows better focus and concentration on the change.

Which tip will you enact first? You have the power to make your future healthier and happier!

11 Tips For Losing Weight With Awesome Success

Posted by | Slimming | Saturday 4 September 2010 1:41 am

Losing weight in a sustained and healthy way isn’t hard! It’s a matter of rediscovering how to listen to what your body wants and treating it with respect. Here are 11 tips for losing weight and keeping it off for good.

1. Don’t crash diet. Slow and steady wins the race. If you put sustainable habits into practice you’ll maintain your slimmer figure for good rather than damaging your body through yo-yo dieting. Diets are temporary. Instead think about changing your lifestyle to accommodate the new, slim you that you’re moving towards.

2. Eat a variety of different foods so you don’t get bored, and in fact don’t deny yourself any food — it’ll just make you crave that food and can lead to a binge. Just eat it in small portions.

3. Cut down on sodas and replace with carbonated water with a slice of lemon. Eat fruit rather than drinking fruit juice (whole fruit fills you up more and contains less sugar). And drink plenty of water to quench your thirst and flush out toxins.

4. Eating (and drinking) less fat will help you to lose weight, guaranteed. Switch to skimmed milk (it won’t take long to get used to) and use spray-on cooking oil rather than oil from bottle. Avoid trans fats altogether.

5. Cut down on sugar. The more refined it is, the worse it is, so the sugar in fruit is fine (in moderation) but the sugar in cakes, chocolate and even baked beans should be avoided.

6. Also reduce your refined carbohydrates, particularly white flour, which has no nutritional value. That means cutting down on cakes, biscuits/cookies, refined pasta and, of course, white bread — go wholegrain instead.

7. Cut out processed foods as much as possible — they tend to contain a lot of sugar, carbs and salt. And get rid of fast foods too. You know they have a low nutritional value, and they contain a lot of trans fats and other nasties. If you do have a fast food craving, just eat a little of that food until your stomach feels satisfied and ditch the rest.

8. Eat fibre-rich foods. Dietary fibre fills you up, is low in calories, and is great for digestion (preventing constipation). Fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses are all good sources of fibre.

9. One of the key tips for losing weight is to only eat when you’re physically hungry. Too often we overeat for all sorts of other reasons. And eat slowly — this gives your brain time to catch up to the fact that you’re satisfied before you overeat.

10. Try to eat healthily and in moderation most of the time but allow for the fact that you will slip up occasionally! When you’ve overeaten, don’t beat yourself up. Take a step back and ask yourself why it happened so that you can catch yourself next time. Don’t let it be a reason to give up your mindful way of eating altogether — just carry on with better habits the next day.

11. One of the tips for losing weight that people balk at is exercise. But if you’re serious about losing weight, you really should incorporate at least a little into your daily routine. Begin gradually — just a 10 minute walk once a day is a good start. Then, after a month or so you can build up to a longer walk and maybe try a bit of running. Find exercise you enjoy, so you’ll stick to it. Muscle burns more energy than fat, even at rest, so you’ll be using up more calories when your muscle mass increases.

Remember, you’re in this for the long term! If you can make some small changes in your lifestyle you’ll reap the benefits forever.

Beauty Summer Tips.

Posted by | Body | Saturday 4 September 2010 12:38 am

Summer is the time when you have to take special care of your beauty. Sea/pool water and too much time spent on sun can seriously damage your hair and skin, but proper care can make you shine naturally. The same rules apply to makeup and wardrobe. Perfect make-up can easily melt away so why don’t you show your natural beauty? There are many tricks that are helpful for looking good in summer. Although only a few weeks of summer are still in front of us, these beauty tips will help you look great and restore damage of improper body care.

If you start your day by putting on a thick layer of makeup, abandon this habit for summer days. Use as little makeup as possible, because even if you use much of it, it will melt away. Skin pores can get blocked easily by sweat and dusts and other dirt during hot days and a layer of make-up makes it only worse. Let your skin breathe!

Make up helps us to highlight our beauty and hide imperfections; there’s no need to put all the make-up means away while it’s summer.

However, make-up foundation is one thing that you should forget till the autumn comes. If you can’t live without it, replace it with tinted moisturizer. It is capable of hiding small skin flaws, but it is much lighter than a foundation and it doesn’t feel like something stuck on your face.

Dare to wear bold make-up colors, but keep those light: dark dramatic eye makeup may look like black eye if you choose a wrong occasion to wear it. However, your fingernails and especially toenails are different talk! Choose juicy colored nail polish and stun everyone! Remember to take care of your feet and hands before putting the nail polish on. Well groomed nails with fun color manicure and pedicure attract the attention easily while untidy nails attract attention as well but not in a way you should be cheerful about.

Waterproof cosmetics are great salvation for summer make up. This doesn’t mean you have to pack your regular cosmetics and put it away till the summer ends, but if you’re buying new makeup means, think waterproof. Waterproof cosmetics should be your best friend for hot weather; especially if you’re into dark colors. Otherwise you may look like a raccoon when great makeup smudges around your eyes. Choose bronzer for evening and blush anytime to create an image of sun-kissed cheeks.

Full Body Massage Therapy Tips & Techniques

Posted by | Body | Saturday 4 September 2010 12:33 am

Massage has been used as a curing therapy for many thousands of years. Records dating back to 2700 B. C. show that in China massage was used to treat many illnesses or to prevent any. Even Hippocrates, the famous Greek physician writing in 400 B. C. , recommended that physicians should treat war or sports injuries with rubbing and massage.

The ancient cultures of Japan, Rome, Egypt and Arabia all considered massage to be calming, soothing and relaxing, and also very important as a therapeutic therapy. Now, in the 21st century, there are many different kinds of massage therapies available, each of which offers specific benefits to the mind and body. Full Body Massage is one of them.

These forms of specific massage can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, plus they can be used to simply unwind and relax.

What are the benefits?

Full Body Massage promotes relaxation and improved sleep, eases the symptoms of stiff, tired joints, encourages improved circulation and speeds up digestion. Clients who have experienced these forms of dedicated massage report that they find the treatment soothing and relaxing.

The skin’s natural functions will be stimulated improving the condition of the skin and the warmth created will help relax the body physically and mentally. Full Body Massage technique involves a sequence of movements working superficially and deeper into the tissue layers. Movements such as effleurage work over the skin with the palm of the hand producing relaxation, whereas movements like petrissage work deeply. Petrissage movements such as wringing and kneading will help to relieve tension promoting deep relaxation in the tissues and muscles.

What to expect?

As no two people are alike, the body massage routine will be tailored to the client’s needs. For those clients who are apprehensive about a massage treatment and of course the stigma attached to this may need some reassurance. A professional Massage Therapist will offer this treatment respecting the client’s modesty at all times. The client is covered in towels, which are turned back to reveal only the area to be massaged at that time. Areas massaged in a full body massage are normally back, legs (back and front), arms front of shoulders and optionally abdomen.

By ensuring you call only a reputable, established company that has professional certificates and qualifications for its therapists, you will receive a wonderful, relaxing, treatment.

Why a Full Body Massage?

The massage is good for people who want to unwind and relax! It is a very relaxing and soothing massage. Available full Body Massages are for example:

-Swedish

-Holistic

-Deep Tissue

-Aromatherapy

As with any massage, it’s a good idea to avoid big meals and alcohol beforehand.

Oily Skin Makeup Tips

Posted by | Make-Up | Friday 3 September 2010 11:40 pm

Wearing makeup when you have oily skin can be troubling at times. I know because I have extremely oily skin myself, so I’m constantly looking in the mirror every couple of hours to see if my nose is glaring. I’ve asked my dermatologist if there is anything he could prescribe to suppress the production of oil, and unfortunately his response was “no”. He did point out that I will still look great at 50 years old, which does help the situation.

Over the years I’ve learned how to cope with some very useful products and tips that I’m sure will benefit you as well:

1. Blot powder – This is a wonderful product that I carry around with me everyday in my purse. It comes in a compact with a powder puff, similar to sheer powder. Instead of touching up with more makeup or sheer powder, I use blot powder. It’s translucent, so I can get rid of the oiliness without caking more makeup onto my face. Another advantage is that my makeup lasts longer because I’m not reapplying it throughout the day.

2. Blotting papers – These can be found anywhere – from beauty supply stores to cosmetic counters. These are small oil-absorbing sheets of paper that come in a small package that you can easily carry around with you throughout the day. All you have to do is dab the oily areas of your face – typically the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. The papers will absorb the oil without leaving a powdery substance on your face or removing your makeup.

3. Oil-control lotion – You can purchase this at almost any cosmetic counter. It’s very easy to apply and you can wear it under your makeup. Just dab a little on the oily areas of your face and blend outward. It controls shine and provides a matte finish. Most oil-control lotions work really well, but you may have to decrease the use if you find that your skin gets dry and starts flaking.

4. Facial Tissue – When all else fails, grab a sheet of tissue paper! Besides using a blot powder, facial tissue is another product that I use throughout the day as well. Most are 2-ply, but it works better if you separate them and use 1-ply. They’re almost as useful as the blotting papers, and a lot cheaper too! Try to avoid buying ones that have fragrance or color because it may irritate your skin and cause breakouts.

5. Cleanser/Moisturizer – Neither of these will absorb oil or block out the production, but they should be part of your everyday skincare routine. Always opt for a cleanser that is oil-free, and there are some great ones that are specifically made for oily skin. Your moisturizer should be water based with SPF15 or greater and be labeled as “noncomedogenic”. Your cleansing and moisturizing routine should be implemented morning and night to avoid clogging pores.

6. Foundation makeup – Should be labeled “oil free” to prevent adding unnecessary oil to your face. Because I love a matte look, my everyday foundation contains powder, and comes in a powder compact. Foundation that is water-based or oil free come in various shades for many cosmetics lines, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that is right for you.

Wedding Car Hire Tips

Posted by | Make-Up | Friday 3 September 2010 11:35 pm

Planning for your wedding day can be a daunting prospect. There are so many things to organise, which church to book, which style of wedding dress should you choose and even which wedding car hire company to use. It can seem as if there is so much to plan, yet so little time. However, the following tips should help to give you an idea of the questions that you should be asking yourself, before deciding which company to entrust to deliver you to your wedding, on time and in style:

-Consider what type of car you would like to arrive at the church in. Some companies specialise in providing the older, classic type of wedding car, such as the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. Alternatively, there are other companies that prefer to use a modern style of motorcar, such as the Rolls Royce Phantom, which has been manufactured with coach style rear doors, allowing a more graceful exit of the vehicle. A further benefit to choosing a modern vehicle may be the reliability factor. If you plan to go on a long journey in your wedding car, the last thing that you want to happen is breakdown and have to wait to be rescued.

-Confirm with the wedding car hire company that they have a vehicle in reserve, just in case there are any problems with your first choice of wedding car. If there is no reserve vehicle, what will happen if the initial car has a mechanical fault? After a long time planning your wedding, you will want it to go ahead without any hitches.

-It may be worth taking into account the time of year you are due to get married. If it is during the summer months, you may want to use a vehicle which has air-conditioning. After spending a considerable amount of time on your hair and make-up, it is unlikely that you will want to arrive at your wedding hot and bothered.

-It is important to speak to friends and family, to see if they can recommend a company to you. If you know someone who has used a company before which has provided a good level of customer service, it makes sense to consider using the same company. Alternatively, there maybe various websites or search engines, such as Google or Yahoo, which allow past customers to leave a review for a particular company. Although, this may not be a definitive guide, it is still worth doing some research and seeing what sort of reviews a company are receiving.

-Cheapest is not always best. It is worth paying a little extra, if it means getting the car that you want, at a time that you want.

-If possible try to view the vehicle before you confirm the booking. You will want to arrive at your wedding in a vehicle that is immaculately presented, as opposed to looking a little worn around the edges.

-Finally, try to book your wedding car as early as possible. Weddings are more popular during the summer months, so if you want to have the car of your choice then do not leave the wedding car hire arrangements to the last minute.

Getting married is a wondrous occasion and your wedding day should be one of the best days of your life. Your choice of wedding car can really enhance the event and should be an important part of your wedding plans. If you follow the above tips, you should have a better idea as to what to ask any prospective wedding car hire company before you sign on the dotted line.
