UK available products: Recommendation for a good alcohol-free, oil-free, natural toner?

Posted by | Skin care | Friday 3 September 2010 11:09 pm

I have combination skin which is prone to regular breakouts. Due to that fact I was advised to use a good alcohol-free, oil-free, natural toner but I don’t really know which products fall in this category. Is toning really that important after cleansing? I got the moisturiser after all. . . ?

At the moment I am using the following products:

Cetaphil facial cleanser
Cetaphil Moisturiser
Dermaquest Skin Therapy Acne TX Mask
Clarins Sun Wrinkle Control Eye Contour Care SPF 30

I have exactly the same skin type as you and this time of year can be particularly troublesome as the air cools and dries. I found that my breakouts were caused by using a cleanser, as the creamy consistancy left my pores blocked, despite my thorough regime. So I tried a few things and have found the best toners to be Kiehl’s Tea Tree Toner or Chanel (it’s green!) I literally have a really simple regime that I have been using for the past two years and would never go back. I use Clinique soap for oily/combination skin, followed by the toner, and then I sweep Olay beauty fluid under my eyes and aroung my mouth and my neck. That’s it! I’ve found it to be more cost effective, good value for money because although not cheap to buy, they are very economical products and a little really does go a long way. I think you are perhaps usuing to many products and may be actually weighing the skin down. I use an exfoliator once a week (Soap & Glory ‘The Greatest Scrub Of All’) to give my skin a deeper clean and use a clay-based mud mask (currently i’m usuing Calmia Detoxify mask) once a month/once every two months. Hope that helps and enjoy sampling lots of new things! Don’t forget to head to the makeup counters and ask for samples so you don’t buy products and then discover they are not for you. :-)

I think the best natural toner of all is to splash your face with cold water but you could try Aloe Gel – it’s nice and refreshing and you can feel your pores tightening. Personally, I find that all toners do more harm than good to my skin and now many beauty professionals are advising that toning is not necessary. I do love Clinique products, especially the Rinse off foaming cleanser and the Dramatically Different Moisturiser, but their toner is far too harsh (even the one for sensitive skin type). Don’t be persuaded to spend pots of money and be encouraged to buy by the beauty experts – they make money by selling their products. Sometimes the cheapest beauty products are the best. It’s great that you are using a SPF30 on your eyes but make sure you use one on the rest of your face too. Good luck!

Liz Earle skin care is all Im saying – google it. I have reeeeeeeeeeeally senstive combination skin (lucky me) and after trying this a year back its now all I use. All of their products are amazing and natural.

By the way I agree with the person above me – the senstive Clinique toner is far too harsh – it messed up my skin once and now I aviod their products like the plague!
